Non-Player Characters (NPC) are all entities, that are not directly controlled by the player. There are generic, and named unique NPCs.

Overview

Neutral NPCs have white font names like "Chiken". Once killed, they will not respawn.

Friendly NPCs have blue font names and a surname to their generic name like "Anezastan the Innkeeper". Once killed they will respawn if they are residents/livestock. If recruited from an NPC city, a new named character will be generated after the respawn cooldown.

Unique NPCs have blue font names and a custom written name. Usueally with a title and the name afterwards in brankets like "Frontier Inspector 『Loytel』"

Big Daddies also bear the 『』 marks, even though, they are generic NPCs. This is probably to protect them from exploits.
