The Hillfolk are a short and rugged race of stout stature. Once, they built grand cities of gold and gems deep beneath the earth, but much of those splendors now remains only as ruins inhabited by dangerous monsters. Possessing advanced mining and crafting skills, their compact, sturdy bodies are equipped to thrive in the darkest and most toxic of environments. They have a profound love of alcohol and can summon strength beyond their usual capabilities when they drink.

Overview
Short, hard-working people from the mountains. Hillfolk are famously stout, and proud of their skill in mining and working with not just minerals but all kinds of materials. Generations of living underground have given them resistances against darkness and the poisonous beasts that live in it.
Hillfolk are a specialized race, but not to extremes; they lie on the physical scale where nefu would be on the magical scale. For an extreme version of their archetype, a player may consider creating a golem character instead. They start with great strength and constitution, decent dexterity and willpower, and below average in everything else, discouraging them from ranged combat or magic.
Hillfolk receive random bonuses to their stats from drinking; drinking alcohol adds a static bonus of about 12 to a random stat. This effect stacks, so multiple stats can be buffed this way; blessed alcohol increases the duration of the buff and roughly doubles its power. The duration of the initial buff is not refreshed by further drinking, so over-preparing for an enemy can lead to earlier buffs expiring mid-battle. The bonus is static, so while it's very useful early-game the boosts gradually become less notable as the player's stats grow.
While poison is still a relatively rare element in the alpha, darkness is commonly found when dealing with several types of undead and is a useful resistance to have.
Suggested Classes
While the strong physical stats of hillfolk make them suited to melee classes, a decent will score also allows them to dabble in holy magics, which are rooted in will.

- Thief
