But if I had to explain why I’m doing this here, and to express it in a non-agenda way before I really get going, it’s because not only does this bother me, it also matters to me, so I’m using this platform and my reach to plug my thoughts. Some people seem to have extremely mistaken expectations for Elin based on a single guy’s video on Elona, and I’d like to take this opportunity to address all of that to set things straight, so here we go. This way, people know what they’re getting into when they start playing Elin.
Maintaining the agenda is always the top priority, and as a vanilla purist, it should come as no surprise that I am anti-E+. (For some quick background, E+ is short for Elona+, which is like… I guess a modded version of Elona? It’s the most popular variant/branch and probably the one almost everyone is familiar with or has had experience with. It’s also the one SsethTzeentach made a Youtube video on.) I’ve never really played a lot of E+ (maybe a couple of hours at most?), so a lot of this is stuff I’ve gathered from discussions. But I’m quite a bit against E+ because if I were to draw an analogy, vanilla Elona would be akin to… say, classic Runescape right? OOMSESTepNC (Omake Overhaul Modify Sukutu Edition South Tyris Step Nasuko Custom) would be OSRS (Old School Runescape), and E+ would be Runescape 3. Talking about E+, it has a lot of stuff that Ano added and to incentivize people to engage in his content, it’s… very much forced down your throat, where if you don’t play with what he’s added, you’re missing out on so much (hence the popularity with Custom GX that lets you *disengage* from certain things he’s added). Some examples of things he’s added might include AP and the subsequent “speed arms race”, where as far as I know, speed in Acts 2 and 3 scales into the thousands, and as a result he has to balance around such bloated stats. And unfortunately, people are used to that pace or speed of gameplay when vanilla (and Elin) are much slower games.

And with regards to Sseth? Ugh. Sure, I will absolutely acknowledge the attention he brought to Elona, but he’s also the cause of so, so many misunderstandings about the game. He’s the reason so many people conflate (vanilla) Elona and E+. With regards to the misunderstandings though, you can easily see this on the Steam Discussion boards, where people rave (yeah, it’s pretty stupid) and express their excitement about things like “bleach abortions”, “pregnancies”, and other dumb stuff like “prostitutes everywhere” or whatever Sseth said in his video. First of all, a lot of it was translators who took the liberty to translate things inaccurately. Very tasteless, edgy, stupid stuff that was exacerbated by Sseth (who is obviously a content creator and thus his focus is on shock value and entertainment, rather than accuracy). Secondly, from what I’ve heard, this was even eventually addressed in the Japanese version because now it’s “parasitized” instead of “pregnant”.

So please, remember, this game isn’t E+. It’s a much slower game that has you really take your time and dive deep into its various mechanics, in contrast to the myriad (yet shallow) mechanics in E+. It’s also not like what Sseth stupidly described in his… idk, for-max-shock-value, edgy video about Elona. There’s a lot more to the world of Ylva than whatever dumb things he talked about.

Oh, and also, there is a greater emphasis on base building, base management, and all that. But it’s part of the charm of Elin. You can choose to ignore that part of the game completely, but at that point, just go back to E+ or wherever you came from. Base building/management is a major part of the game, but it’s also so nice because you get to really feel more connected/attached to your character and the world. Instead of just buying a deed or palace, you can actually build your own mansion. At the very least, your very own quaint home with rooms for each of your allies/pets. Want to make the house out of wood logs? Or maybe planks instead? Or how about stone or brick? You can do that! And instead of deeds of storage house, you can now build a storeroom with chests for potions, scrolls, weapons, etc. You name it! It just… allows for more immersion, in my opinion.

I guess my final thing would be proof. You might think I’m exaggerating. That this isn’t all that bad, or that it isn’t ''as'' bad as I’m describing. Well, I have proof. Please refer to the following posts on the Elin Steam Discussion boards. These kinds of cringe opinions are not unpopular; in fact, I’d say they’re terrifyingly commonplace. Please make sure you set your expectations accordingly. That, or just don’t play at all and go back to your E+ game where you can frolic in all the mistranslations you want. And make sure you keep the Sseth video on repeat on your other monitor so you can indulge in all the crazy and zany antics of the world of Ylva!
So please, remember, this game isn’t only about all of the weird things Sseth emphasized and focused on in his edgy video about Elona that he made with the primary goal of max shock value. Elin is a much slower and deep RPG game that has you really take your time, interact with its various mechanics, and explore the world. There’s a lot more to the world of Ylva than whatever dumb things he talked about, like its world-building, its characters, its lore, and more. You ''could'' focus on all of the shallow things that Sseth talked about, but those are moreso a result of the mechanics of the game as well as random, procedural generation. Or you could focus on the world of Ylva like I mentioned. What you choose honestly says a lot more about ''you'' than it does about the game.

Anti-Sseth agenda

Maintaining the agenda is always the top priority, so why am I talking about SsethTzeentach? Ugh. While I will acknowledge some of the attention he brought to Elona, he’s also the cause of so, so many misunderstandings about the game. He’s the reason so many people have weird, cringe expectations of Elona (and now Elin) as some “adult” and “ero” game.
