Every character activity, whether combat, crafting, or mining, has an associated skill.
Skills can be learned and trained with a trainer in town.
Overview
How to see skill levels
If you hover the mouse over a skill and see X+Y (for example, 5+21), the first value is the character's own skill level, and the number after the plus sign is a bonus level acquired through means such as equipment and faith.
If the first value is displayed as 0 (for example, 0+21), the character does not yet possess that skill and it will not level up. The skill will become unusable if the bonuses are lost.
The effectiveness of skills increases with each level gained. Fractions of a skill level do not improve its effectiveness, but rather represent how much progress has been made toward acquiring the next level.
Skill Potential
Potential is a multiplier applied to the experience gained by a skill.
Base potential is 100 and may be increased by a character's class and/or race. Potential can never fall below this base value.
Potential can be increased for a specific skill by paying platinum coins to a trainer. The cost increases based on the level of the skill and current potential. When skill level increases, potential above the base value is reduced.
Visiting a trainer regularly is a good way to quickly raise specific skill levels.
For pets, potential is trained by giving them Orens through the trade command. They will spend this money in towns and all potentials will increase.
Initial Skills
All Characters start with the following skills:
General Skills: Mining, Lumberjacking, Gathering, Meditation, Faith
Production Skills: Carpentry, Crafting
Combat skills: Heavy Armor, Shield, Throwing, Light Armor, Evasion, Strategy
Weapon Skills: Martial Arts, Long Sword, Axe, Scythe, Staff, Polearms, Mace, Bow, Short Sword, Crossbow
These skills in combination with skills granted from Class and Race become the player's initial skills.
Learning New Skills
New skills can be learned from Trainers in specific towns or settlements. A few skills are only taught by trainers accessible after joining a Guild.
It is also possible to acquire Skill Books from shrines, or from completion of random Nefia. These books can be read by the player, or by a pet if given as a gift. If the corresponding skill is unknown, the player or pet will acquire the skill. If it is known, the skill will gain experience.
Pets and residents learn the skills associated with them by performing jobs and hobbies. In order for them to do their jobs and hobbies, they must be allowed to stay at the base without being brought along in a party.
Skills have unique alias, typically useful for modding and console commands.
Related attribute
Gaining skill experience by using a skill also improves gives experience to the associated attribute. For example, gaining experience in weight lifting automatically adds experience to Strength.

Crafting Skills
- Affects the learning of craft recipes and the quality of the finished product. See the item page for details.
- Crafting when under skill requirements increases stamina cost of crafting per difference, and the higher the stamina consumed per crafting, the more skill experience is gained.

Note: Writing tool and calligraphy tool give experience in Literacy skill. Shears and Brush give experience in Taming. Butcher's tool and Butcher knife give experience in Anatomy.
