Overview

Mystics from a foreign land, sword sages weave magic into their weapons, invoking spells through the rhythm and movement of combat. This unique casting style gives them immense burst damage and allows them to circumvent many of the problems other spellcasters face, at the cost of requiring expensive preparation beforehand.

Strategy

Sword sages start with a calligraphy tool; this tool is the cornerstone of sword sage strategy. If you lose it, you can reacquire it at a furniture store in Mifu Village or through crafting.

It allows a spellbook of any ball, bolt, dart, touch, earthquake and meteor spell to be bound to a melee weapon as talismans, turning each charge of the spellbook into a certain number of talismans that are cast when the weapon is used in combat. While anyone can use a calligraphy set, sword sages' class feat increases both the damage dealt by talisman-cast spells and the number of talismans granted per spellbook charge. If they can survive an early game with few defensive capabilities and resources, sword sages are capable of dealing extreme amounts of burst damage with their double attack action economy and uninterruptable spells.

For detailed specifications of calligraphy tool and talismans, please refer to the page on talisman.

However, there are also some limitations on a sword sage's power. For example, evasive enemies may need to be dealt with by more conventional magic, as talismans do not trigger if the physical attack misses. Therefore, you will need to use traditional spells to deal with enemies with high evasion, or compensate for your hit rate with weapon and equipment enchantments.

Furthermore, even with the Sword Sage's feats, the number of talismans that can be loaded is insufficient, so the Sword Sage cannot continuously activate talismans. You can extend the duration of talismans by attaching them to weapons with save talisman enchantments, such as katana, or by carrying spare talisman-equipped weapons, but most opponents will need to be dealt with using normal physical attacks or spells.

Sword Sages are not only skilled in talismans, but also in intonation, because all Sword Sage's domains have intonation spell. It can be easily reapplied in one turn and can deal significant damage if you exploit your opponent's weaknesses, so use it actively even against opponents who don't require talismans.

Sword Sages have five domains of expertise: Fire, Cold, Lightning, Nether, and Holy. They can quickly take down enemies with these weaknesses. In general, Undead are weak to Fire, machines and golems are weak to Lightning. And Fire and Cold, Lightning and Darkness, and Holy and Nether are all paired together, so enemies with one element are weak to the other.

In addition, enemies that have been wet by a cold attack will take 1.5 times more damage from lightning attacks, regardless of their weaknesses.

Exploiting weaknesses is a tactic used by other spellcasters as well, but Sword Sages have the advantage of being able to do so against a wide range of enemies with low MP thanks to their domains and intonation.

Suggested Races

A sword sage must be capable of both magical and martial prowess, and races that best suit that are good picks.

Special Considerations:

As talismans do not consume MP, the player can instead focus on races that provide significant melee advantage but have lower innate mana stats, such as Golem and Wraith, or classes that provide strong skill potential bonuses in tandem with the class such as Demigod.

Suggested Gods

  • Ehekatl of Luck's artifact has the effect of rerolling when an attack misses, compensating for the Sword Sage's weakness of not being able to activate talismans unless they hit.
  • Horome of Moonshadow is a good match for Sword Sages, who mainly use intonation spells. However, keep in mind that hers mana absorption ability and bonus to casting do not greatly benefit talismans.

Starting Equipment
